SO MANY WAYS TO HAVE FUN WITH YOUR DOG

The Games We Play With Our Dogs

  • Agility

It all begins with foundation work to build that connection between you and your dog. We want you to be able to clearly and consistently communicate with your dog to ensure success on the agility field. Private lessons are held at SchaSam Farm agility field for $20 for a 30 minute session. Want to have a group session with your buddies? Come on down for an hour session for $40 no matter how many dogs you bring to play with!

  • Barn Hunt

Instinctual work for your dog in finding a live rat inside a PVC tube hidden in amongst the straw bales in one of our three permanent barn hunt rings. We provide both group practices and private lessons. Use the contact us page to arrange for private lessons or use the Sign Up Genius link in the Events & Lessons page for Barn Hunt for group sessions.

  • Treibball

Treibball is urban herding with yoga balls instead of the woolie critters! Our group or private classes take your dog from playing games of finding treats while learning to move the ball to full out competition in Standard and Balls In Order. Private sessions are available at $20 for 30 minutes and are held when we can synch calendars. Use the Contact Us page to set up your sessions.

  • North American Sport Dog Assocation

NASDA gives our dogs an opportunity to really use their nose in both field and urban settings. For field work we track or trail a rat in Trailing & Locating and Trailing & Locating Brace (two dogs working in tandem), and finding a shed antler. In urban settings (highly human scented areas), our dogs are seeking to identify where a rat (in a safe quarry box) has been set or where a lost human article has been placed (glove, hat, key, credit card, cell phone, pen….you name it) Challenge your dog in “real world” nose work and watch their confidence grow! We provide private NASDA lessons for $30 per 30 minute session - working at SchaSam Farm for the urban work and SchaSam Feld (Mt Vernon field location) for field work

  • AKC Certifications

Show the world your dog knows how to deal with daily life. We provide training to support you in your quest for various AKC certifications from AKC Farm Dog (ignoring stock, dealing with noises and unfamilar surfaces - and all of the things you might encounter on a farm), to AKC Canine Good Citizen (good manners for an urban/suburban dog), Temperament testing and trick dog. We offer private lessons for $20 per 30 minute session and hold various practice sessions throughout the year in Farm Dog, CGC and Trick Dog.

  • SchaSam Agility Group

SchaSam’s agility enthusiasts host numerous North American Dog Agility trials throughout the year - both indoors at the Fun Fur Paws arena and outdoors on grass at the SchaSam Farm agility field. We are a social group and enjoy having FUN at our trials. Expect lots of laughter! We sponsor a charity each trial that benefits from our ribbon buy back or other events. Saturday night potlucks after the trial give us an opportunity to get to know our dog community.

  • SchaSam Barn Hunt Club

Our Barn Hunt Club hosts numerous Barn Hunt Association sanctioned Barn Hunt trials throughout the spring, summer and fall. From Instinct through Master and the fast and furious game of Crazy 8 in our three permanent barn hunting rings.

  • Being a "good dog"

Being a “good dog” can be hard work. For those handlers that need a little extra coaching on how to overcome or to manage their dog’s issues, we offer basic manners and private lessons to work on whatever is causing friction. No recall? Pulling on the leash? Shark attack at treat time? Won’t get in the car? We can help with private sessions that will provide you with ideas to work on at home. Private lessons when we can synch up calendars for $20 (cash or check) for a 30 minute session to work on those “good dog” manners. Use the “contact us” page to set up your sessions!

  • Puppy Engagement & Future Sport Stars

A group class for puppies from fully vaccinated with their second set of shots to 12 months of age. Each week we cover the basics of living with a puppy (and puppy brain), learn some games that provide for a connection with your puppy and learn about a new sport. Week one might be targeting and bucket work with a touch of agility. Week two might see games that will work with Treibball. Week three might have the puppies engaging their nose in NASDA or Barn Hunt. The games are fun, the puppies and handlers learn how to interact with each other and we can see if a sport really “turns on” the puppy.

From backyard foundation work, to local, regional and national competitions, the more you play with your dog, the better the connection. When you have that, your dog will do everything they can to please you! At SchaSam Farm we teach a wide variety of skills; from basic manners up through high level skills. Since 2015 we have had the priviledge of working with over 200 handlers and dogs, from a 3lb chi to a 150lb Mastiff, from lap dog to working dog. Our instructors truly have a passion for the different sports they teach and through honing their skills at competitions and through continuing education, they are always looking for new ways to better their own skills so they can pass on their knowlege to our students.

How Can I Make Equipment and Treats?

There are lots of ways to make inexpensive equipment or doggie treats. SchaSam Farm shares a couple ideas for making hoops, jumps, and lattice gates and treats. Click on the “Make Them” button to the right for (hopefully) easy to follow instructions on the equipment builds. How to make some great doggie treats will be linked here soon. Please check back later for how to make fish treats and non-greasy hot dog treats.
